Level Design Project

Made for a University Level Design Assignment in UE5
Summary
In the distant future, a war between the inner colonies and the outer colonies have broken out, causing millions of death in a gruelling war for each meter of each planet.
You play as an elite special forces soldier, given the hardest missions that many have failed before you.
What did I do
- Created an enemy using behavioural tree's
- Coded systems to create an immersive game such as random placement of an explosion VFX in the environment, a note system and other interactable objects
- Used multiple level design principles to guide the player through a level with an increasing scale of difficulty
- Created to a schedule through the use of an agile development plan, to ensure the game was playable and the level design guided the player as planned
How I did it
- First spent a couple of days researching into level design principles and what famous examples of level design did
- Then researched for a couple of days into games which inspired me
- For 1 weeks I blocked out the level and had it play tested to ensure it guided players through the level
- The next week, I built the level, added materials to the level and added some filler assets into it
- For 2 weeks, I created interactables in the level such as door's which open/close, random explosions in the envrionment and tutorial pop up's, with play testing to ensure they worked and created a more immersive and intuitive game
- For 1 week, I created a shooting system, with a UI and some interactables to go along with it, with some play testing to go along with it
- Then, for 2 weeks I created the enemy AI using behavioral trees and play tested it to ensure functionality and that it created an increasing scale of difficulty
- The next week, I created the audio for the game and integrated it to make the level seem more alive and play tested it
- The week after that, I created a note system to give the level a bit more depth and make it seem to be apart of a wider game
- The last 2 weeks, I only spent having it play tested and fixing bugs that popped up
What I could do better
- Spent some more time developing some systems such as the enemy AI as it can be scaled up to do things such as detect noises easily and make the enemy AI smarter
- Added more filler assets as the environments are quite barren most way through the level
